ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS
This is towards Sustainable Livelihoods. Patinaai Osim will provide a space that will enable women in the community to engage in income-generating activities as well as quarters for health education, conservation learning, finance management, and any other enlightening activities that will be deemed necessary and relevant to the community.
Women face unprecedented challenges to their livelihoods, their identities, their institutions, and their sense of place in the evolving global village. This program aims to strengthen the livelihoods base of women.
We enhance economic opportunities for women through the development of knowledge and skills as well as linking them to business development support services such as financial training. These include efforts towards improved confidence and self-esteem among women and girls
Kajiado County has seen an increase in the number of maternal deaths among women and girls, resulting from the inadequacy of well-equipped health facilities to deliver maternal health services to those who need it most.
Despite recent efforts by the Kenyan government to rollout free maternity and healthcare to pregnant women, most residents do not benefit due to the distance from their village to the nearest hospital.
The cost of accessing transportation to reach health facilities is prohibitive, resulting in the popularity of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).
Further, the situation is exacerbated by the number of unplanned teen pregnancies occurring due to limited or no comprehensive reproductive health education and services targeted at the youth.
The inadequacy of quality and comprehensive health services coupled with the nomadic lifestyle of the Maasai population has a negative cascading effect on women, girls, and the wider community. The consequences of these are:
- Maternal deaths
- Infant mortality
- Teenage pregnancies
Patinaai Osim seeks to bridge this gap by partnering with community health workers and educating the local women on reproductive health. Patinaai promotes uptake of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) membership and Government-sponsored health cover programs among the communities.
This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-3) and the Big Four Agenda of the Government of Kenya on the Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Patinaai Osim will partner with these programs to address the following:
- Maternal health;
- Pre and Post-natal care education
- Reproductive & menstrual health
- Nutrition education
- Reproductive Health
- Exclusive Breastfeeding
Educate communities on NHIF medical Cover and sponsored programs;
- Linda Mama, Inua Jamii
Partner with NHIF to sensitize, recruit and register NHIF members
